It will be a quick one for today, three random things for my newsletter number three.
1. Illustrators used to dress better back in the day.
If you could just take a quick peep into my computer you’d be surprised by the name of some of my folders. “empty”, “Unsolved mysteries”, “my dad’s doppelganger”, “Solved mysteries”, “experiment3”, “forgotten kiosks”... Strange folders on which I carefully collect images of very specific subjects.
Sure, maybe I only save one picture in each of them per year, but they have been carefully chosen to make sure they meet the specific criteria.
I’ll share today part of my collection with you: “Well-dressed Illustrators from the past”. And here’s my take on it: on which moment we as illustrators gave up on dressing elegant? Please don’t answer, I know well that this idea of elegance is only the result of looking at it from the perspective of time and they didn’t necessarily dress better. I’m also aware that romantizing the past sometimes brings backs dangerous conservative ideas. But what I do want me to tell me is what weird hard-to-explain folders do you have in your computer, because before all else I’m a very curious person.
2. Liber
I illustrated this image for Liber which will take place later this year in IFEMA Madrid.
The brief was to create a single image on a plain subtle background so they’d be able to easily adapt it to any size or format. That’s why I ended up doing this straightforward illustration. I concived it as “the book as a meeting point”, because it’s an international and profesional fair, so I did these two persons on opposite pages of the same book about to meet.
3. How I stopped dreaming that I drowned.
For a long time I had two recurring dreams, not on a weekly or monthly basis but more like a two times a year thing. They weren’t nightmares at all, just dreams on wich I was exposed to a very uncomfortable situation.
On one of them I was driving a car without actually having a clue about how to drive. All of a sudden I would be behind the wheel on a moving car in a city and I was desperately trying to stop it by slowing it down without causing an accident. Most of the time I tried to hit something in the most gentle way I could to stop the car. I didn’t realize at the time, but at some point I stopped having that dream.
The other recurring dream was that I drowned in a pool. It was always in pure darkness, where I felt almost blind, in a huge room with extremely high ceilings (in a monumental way) with the lights out. I never got to reach death, and it wasn't bad enough to wake me up so I just kept at the same point, violently struggling to keep alive. Out of the two maybe this one was the most frequent one, and at some point they also stopped.
Not only did it stopped. Recently I dreamt I was on a bus that fell off a cliff. It was night time and it was pouring rain, I could barely see, but I managed to get off the bus through a window and rescued the driver and the rest of passengers and guided them through a jungle.
That’s when I realized that not only I had stopped dreaming that I drowned but my role in this kind of dreams had drastically switched, from victim to hero. Why?
Then I remembered an Hergé interview from the 60’s on which he spoke about some unpleasant dreams he had on which everything was white. Or as he described it “the beauty and cruelty of white”. The dreams stopped when he completed the Tintin It Tibet book which is set in (you guessed it) Tibet, with mostly white landscapes. So he confronted that “fear” and overcame it. Okay, truth be told he wasn’t afraid of the colour white itself, but rather the guilt of having an affair with another woman. But that is a different story.
And then it hit me, the dreams on which I drove a car stopped the moment I took my driving’s license and the dreams on which I drowned stopped when I took swimming lessons and started swimming regularly. I now this isn’t something new, and also kind of lands into an absurd personal growth story territory, but it almost felt like magic that an improvement in real life has such a profound impact in our dreams.
Bonus track: Here’s a personal illustration I did recently.
Looking back into my illustrations I think I can trace an element that seems to appear often: I just love drawing ruins. Something that isn't there anymore but haven't completely vanished, like a clue that's still there for those whose eyes are sharp enough to notice. Vestiges from another time, lives preceding our own. Maybe it's a projection of my fascination with trying to mentally reconstructing them or my obsession with fixing broken stuff, but I just like the image of people wandering around them, exploring. I imagine it as a silent scene, neutral weather, just like in dreams. Everything is happening inside the person who walks around them.
That's it for my third (and not so brief after all) newsletter. I better leave you now as I have other things to do, I promise I’m doing more than just playing Tears Of The Kingdom, honestly, I swear.
Hoy seré breve, aquí van tres cosas aleatorias para mi newsletter número 3.
No sólo paró.
