#1 · It's illegal to kill a wasp in Germany
I know october it's a bit late for the the post-vacation theme of this first newsletter, it was due to come out in september but there was some technical issues.

What did I do on summer?
Back when I was a child I didn't like being asked on my first day of school "what did you do on summer vacation?", because my family didn't have much money back then so I didn't do anything "special" during summer. I still had a lot of fun reading, drawing, being on my own and doing stuff, but I knew it didn't fit everyone’s idea of "summer fun".
The funny thing is that these days I can afford going on holiday, but I still love spending my time daydreaming.
In July me and my girlfriend visited the Black Forest, in the south of Germany. The landscapes were stunning and we enjoyed a colder weather until the heat wave reached us mercilessly during our last 2 days there.
Talking about being merciless, the wasps are everywhere there. And I mean E V E R Y W H E R E. So when it came to choose between being able to eat something sitting on a bench or run away to not get attacked by them I have to admit I killed one or two. I’m sure they later took revenge by stinging Lorena while I was swimming under a waterfall. It turns out killing a wasp could get you in serious trouble (somewhere between 5.000€ and 50.000€ penalty fee), the authorities are probably looking for me right now as we speak.
Back home my phone broke in one million pieces. I won't turn this into a manifesto about how everyone should spend some time away from screens. All I'll say is that the two weeks I had no phone (for the first time in... 15 years?) were a great experience. I focused more on the things I was doing, time passing felt different and I didn't reach my pockets every 15 minutes looking for an easy distraction.
Yeah ok, fascinating. What about illustration?
Workwise I was fortunate enough to enjoy a slow summer. All the work proposals that came into my inbox were due to start in september, and I felt relieved when some projects for august were postponed.
So I took some time to play around with art supplies out of what I usually use (I’m avoiding the words “comfort zone”, did you notice?). I wanted to get away from digital drawing for some time now, just having fun and not worrying at all about results. My work usually feels quite clean, reminiscent of french belgian clear line. But my sketchbooks are actually more messy and spontaneous, with bold brush strokes and weirder anatomy, and that’s something I want to slowly incorporate into my final illustrations. I think I’ll use some of what I've learned this summer too.
I bought some oil pastels from Sennelier because I was loooking for something that can produce a big stroke to confer character to my lines. I chose a colour palette of 6 colours so I wouldn’t waste time choosing between lots of them. As for the paper, I had a big roll of MÅLA paper from Ikea (30 meters for just 4€), you probably can’t tell by the pictures but these are really big drawings. I spread it over the floor, started drawing and this is what came out of it:
As I said, there was not goal but to enjoy it, and I did.
Fun fact, the idea came during my visit to germany. We were on Gengenbach and I saw this old mural and I thought I could try something similar.
Of course I did more than that, but it's mainly projects or illustrations that are still in early stages or still unpublished. More about them in the next newsletter.
Also I updated my portfolio with a few projects from last year, and while I was doing so I felt... proud. It's a strange feeling because sometimes we're absort with what we're doing at the moment and we lack perspective about how far we’ve came.
Illustration as a profession has lots of downsides (more about this soon), so it’s easy to loose track a bit and focus only on the negative stuff, but when you actually stop and think about what you're doing and what you've achieved so far it’s such a great feeling.
So, if you're an illustrator (or creator in any way) take some time to stop, check what you've already done. Don't judge it, don't think about that project that you'd approach in a different way now, don't think about that opportunity you blew away. Just think about what you achieved, pat yourself in the back.
And so we’ve reached the end of #1, I hope you enjoyed it! I’m still giving my first steps in newslettering, but I’m quite excited about giving it a try, it has already sparked some ideas.

¿Qué he hecho este verano?
Y me refiero a todas partes.
